“Barcode invitation letter” is one of the most searched China-visa phrases in Pakistan, but it is not a single universal official document name. Pakistani applicants and agents often use the term for an invitation that appears to have an official verification number, machine-readable code or government-backed issuance route.
For an M business visa, the official Pakistan guidance recognizes several different invitation routes. Knowing which document you actually have is more important than whether someone calls it a barcode letter.
The main invitation documents
Invitation Letter (TE)
An Invitation Letter (TE) is arranged in China through the appropriate authorized channel for a genuine foreign trade or business visit. The Chinese inviting organization normally initiates the process. It is not a letter that the Pakistani applicant creates for himself.
Verification Letter of Invitation
A Verification Letter is another officially recognized invitation document. Under the published Pakistan instructions, it should be accompanied by an ordinary invitation letter from the real Chinese inviting organization.
Ordinary invitation letter from a Chinese company
This is a company-issued letter containing the applicant’s identity, business purpose, dates, cities, relationship, expenses and the inviting company’s full details, formal seal and signature.
An ordinary invitation is required alongside a Verification Letter and remains necessary in certain exemption cases. By itself, it is not automatically sufficient for every first-time M-visa applicant.
Canton Fair invitation
The official Canton Fair invitation is a separate recognized route for M-visa applications. Buyers apply through the Fair’s Buyer E-Service Tool. The Canton Fair states that its invitation is free of charge and can be used to apply for a Chinese visa.
China International Import Expo invitation
The official instructions also recognize a China International Import Expo invitation as a separate M-visa invitation route.
Why people call these documents “barcode invitations”
Community videos often focus on the visible code because applicants want a quick way to distinguish an official document from an ordinary company letter. The problem is that a code or barcode image can also be copied, altered or placed on a fake PDF.
A document should be judged by its issuer, verifiability and consistency, not by the appearance of a code alone.
Who can issue or arrange the document?
- A real Chinese inviting company may apply through the relevant authorized authority in China.
- The Canton Fair can issue its own official invitation through its buyer system.
- A duly authorized tourism office can issue a tourist-group invitation through a Chinese travel agency for Group L cases.
- A Pakistani travel agent cannot legally transform an unverifiable PDF into an official Chinese government document.
ChinaChallo or another facilitator may coordinate with the Chinese inviter, explain requirements and review consistency, but the genuine issuing source must remain identifiable.
When TE or Verification Letter may be exempted
The official instructions list limited exemption circumstances. They include certain Pakistani government personnel travelling on private passports with the required employment annotation, NOC and financial evidence, and applicants who have visited China more than three times since 1 January 2016 and can document those visits.
Even when exempted, the applicant still needs an ordinary invitation from the real Chinese organization and the other required supporting documents.
Do not assume that having one or two old Chinese visas creates an exemption.
How to check an invitation before using it
Check the applicant details
- Full name exactly as shown in the passport
- Gender and date of birth
- Passport number and nationality
- Correct proposed travel dates
- Correct purpose: commercial and trade activity for an M visa
Check the trip details
- Cities and factories or exhibition to be visited
- Relationship with the inviting company
- Who will pay the expenses
- Arrival and departure dates matching the form and bookings
Check the Chinese company
- Exact legal Chinese company name
- Business licence copy
- 18-character Unified Social Credit Code
- Registered address
- Valid landline or business contact
- Legal representative or authorized signatory
- Business scope relevant to the proposed trip
Check the seal and signature
The official guidance says the company seal should be a formal certified seal. Chinese company seals are generally circular. A pasted red image is not proof of legitimacy. Compare the seal name with the legal company name and business licence.
Confirm independently
Contact the company using a channel not supplied only by the agent. Use the company’s official website, exhibition profile, verified marketplace page or a known employee. Ask the Chinese inviter to confirm that it issued the invitation and applied for any official supporting document.
Red flags of a fake invitation service
- “100% visa guarantee”
- No disclosure of the Chinese inviting company
- Invitation unrelated to the applicant’s business
- Company refuses a video call or independent verification
- Different company names on the invitation, licence and form
- Incorrect passport spelling or reused template text
- Payment requested to an unrelated personal account
- A barcode that opens nothing or unrelated information
- Advice to hide the real purpose of travel
Community advice versus official position
“Only a barcode matters”
Incorrect. The authorities can verify the issuer, company, seal, applicant data and financial evidence.
“A supplier’s WhatsApp invitation is enough”
Sometimes an ordinary invitation is part of a valid file, but the required invitation route depends on the applicant’s circumstances. A casual message or unstamped letter is not the same as a complete formal invitation.
“Buy the letter first and find a product later”
High risk. The invitation should reflect a real and explainable commercial purpose.
“Canton Fair registration gives the same document as TE”
Incorrect. The Canton Fair invitation is a separate recognized route. It should not be renamed a TE Letter.
