The Canton Fair can save a Pakistani importer months of online searching - but only when the trip is planned around the right products, the right phase and a clear buying strategy.
This guide explains what the Canton Fair is, who should attend, how Pakistani buyers can prepare, what happens inside the fair, and how to turn a week in Guangzhou into reliable supplier relationships rather than a bag full of brochures.
Next session: The 140th Canton Fair will be held in Guangzhou in three phases: 15-19 October, 23-27 October and 31 October-4 November 2026.
What is the Canton Fair?
The Canton Fair is the common name of the China Import and Export Fair. It was established in 1957 and is hosted by China's Ministry of Commerce and the People's Government of Guangdong Province. It is organized by the China Foreign Trade Centre and held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou.
The fair is designed for international trade. Chinese manufacturers and exporters display products, meet overseas buyers, discuss specifications, quote prices and begin commercial relationships. The current official figures describe an exhibition area of 1.55 million square metres and more than 32,000 onsite exhibitors. The 138th session welcomed 310,000 overseas buyers from 223 countries and regions.
For a Pakistani buyer, the main value is concentration. Instead of visiting dozens of cities or relying entirely on Alibaba conversations, you can meet many suppliers from one category in the same place, compare products side by side and then arrange factory visits with the most promising companies.
Why Pakistani businesses attend
Pakistani importers and manufacturers normally attend for one or more of these reasons:
- To buy finished products directly from Chinese factories.
- To source machinery, components, raw materials or packaging.
- To compare several suppliers before placing a large order.
- To negotiate private-label, OEM or ODM production.
- To discover products before they become common in Pakistan.
- To inspect quality physically rather than relying only on photographs.
- To develop backup suppliers and reduce dependency on one source.
- To combine the fair with factory visits in Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan or Shenzhen.
The fair is especially useful when the expected annual buying volume is large enough to justify travel, samples, testing and supplier-development costs.
Who should attend?
Established importers
An importer already buying through agents or trading companies may use the fair to understand the original factory price, compare specifications and develop direct relationships. The greatest savings are usually not from a single lower quote; they come from better payment terms, more consistent quality, improved packaging and fewer sourcing mistakes over several orders.
Pakistani manufacturers
Manufacturers can source machines, moulds, parts, production lines, electronics, chemicals, packaging and process technology. Phase 1 is usually the most relevant, although building materials and some industrial products can appear in other phases.
E-commerce and retail businesses
Retailers, Shopify sellers, marketplace sellers and private-label brands can discover products and packaging options. However, first-time sellers must be realistic about minimum order quantities, product testing, certification, duties, freight and working capital.
New importers
A first-time importer can learn a great deal at the fair, but should not arrive with only a vague idea such as "I want a profitable product." Prepare product categories, target customer, retail price, target landed cost and expected order quantity before travelling.
Who should not attend yet?
The trip may be premature when:
- You have no defined category or customer.
- You cannot estimate duties, freight and landed cost.
- You do not have funds for samples and a realistic first order.
- Your buying volume is too small for factory MOQs.
- You expect every exhibitor to be the actual manufacturer.
- You are treating the fair as tourism rather than a commercial project.
In that situation, remote sourcing, product research or a smaller wholesale market such as Yiwu may be a better first step.
Understanding the three phases
The Canton Fair is not one continuous exhibition with the same products every day. Each session is divided into three five-day phases, with several gap days between them. Exhibitors and product categories change by phase.
Phase 1: Advanced manufacturing, electronics and industrial products
Typical categories include household electrical appliances, consumer electronics, industrial automation, machinery, power equipment, construction machinery, agricultural machinery, new materials, chemicals, vehicles, vehicle parts, motorcycles, bicycles, lighting, electrical products, new energy, hardware and tools.
Best suited to electronics retailers, solar and energy businesses, auto-parts traders, industrial buyers, machinery importers, hardware wholesalers and Pakistani factories upgrading production.
Phase 2: Home, gifts, building and furniture
Typical categories include ceramics, kitchenware, tableware, household items, glassware, home decoration, gardening, festival products, gifts, clocks, watches, optical instruments, art ceramics, woven and iron products, building materials, sanitary ware, bathroom equipment, furniture and prefabricated house products.
Best suited to home-goods importers, furniture dealers, kitchenware retailers, gift businesses, interior suppliers, construction-material traders and hospitality procurement companies.
Phase 3: Fashion, textiles, health, food and consumer products
Typical categories include toys, baby and maternity products, children's wear, men's and women's clothing, underwear, sportswear, leather and down products, accessories, fabrics, shoes, cases and bags, home textiles, carpets, office supplies, medical devices, health products, food, sports and travel products, personal care, toiletries, pet products and traditional Chinese specialties.
Best suited to apparel brands, textile buyers, footwear importers, leather-goods businesses, toy retailers, medical distributors, food importers, sports businesses and consumer-product sellers.
Venue and daily reality
The fair is held at the China Import and Export Fair Complex, No. 382 Yuejiang Zhong Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou. The venue is enormous. Even a focused buyer can walk many kilometres each day.
A productive day normally includes:
- Reviewing pre-selected exhibitors before entering a hall.
- Meeting suppliers and recording booth numbers.
- Photographing products and labels with permission.
- Collecting quotations in a standard format.
- Adding supplier contacts on WeChat.
- Shortlisting companies for a second meeting or factory visit.
- Updating a comparison sheet at the hotel before details are forgotten.
Comfortable shoes, a light bag, power bank, business cards and a disciplined note-taking system are more valuable than formal clothing.
Registration and the buyer badge
Overseas buyers should pre-register through the official Canton Fair buyer system. Pre-registration is open throughout the year. A first-time buyer normally creates an account, provides identity and company details, uploads a photograph and applies for the buyer badge.
The official 2026 buyer guide says pre-registered overseas buyers can collect a buyer badge free of charge at designated alternative registration offices, including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou South Railway Station, Pazhou Ferry Terminal, designated Guangzhou hotels, the Canton Fair Hong Kong Representative Office and registration offices at the fair complex.
Carry the original passport used for registration. Your badge is an identity document for the fair; do not lend, alter or buy one from an unofficial source.
Visa planning for Pakistani passport holders
Most Pakistani business visitors attending the fair apply for an M visa. The current official instructions accept a Canton Fair Invitation Letter as one of the invitation routes for an M visa.
The process is not simply "get an invitation and receive a visa." You must choose the correct visa centre, complete the online form accurately, upload supporting documents, wait for online approval, then submit your passport and originals at the relevant Gerry's Chinese Visa Application Service Centre.
Start early. The Embassy may request corrections, additional documents or an interview, and no delegation organizer can guarantee approval.
How to prepare 30-45 days before departure
Define your sourcing brief
For each product, write:
- Product name and reference photographs.
- Required material and dimensions.
- Target quality level.
- Required certifications.
- Packaging and branding requirements.
- Expected order quantity.
- Target FOB price and target landed cost in Pakistan.
- Destination port or airport.
- Required production date.
A supplier cannot provide a meaningful quotation when the buyer only asks, "Best price?"
Create a supplier scorecard
Use the same questions for every supplier:
- Are you a manufacturer or trading company?
- Where is the factory?
- What is the MOQ per design, colour and size?
- What is included in the quoted price?
- What is the production lead time?
- What are the payment terms?
- What quality-control process is used?
- Which markets do you export to?
- Can you provide certificates and test reports?
- Can the product and packaging be customized?
- What are the sample charges and delivery time?
Arrange meetings before the fair
Do not depend only on random booth visits. Search the official exhibitor directory, contact existing suppliers and ask a China-side sourcing team to identify factories. The best candidates can be scheduled for booth meetings or off-site factory visits.
Prepare communication tools
Install and test WeChat before travel. Keep digital copies of your passport, visa, hotel, insurance, flight and invitation documents. International roaming or an appropriate connectivity solution should be arranged before arrival. Digital payment options in China should also be tested in advance.
How to judge whether an exhibitor is a factory
A professional booth does not prove factory ownership. Ask for:
- Chinese business licence and registered company name.
- Factory address and photographs.
- Production-line videos or live video call.
- Main export markets.
- Product test reports.
- Factory-audit reports, where available.
- Permission to visit the facility.
- A quotation carrying the same legal company name used for payment.
Some trading companies are excellent partners and may be more flexible than factories. The issue is not that every trader is bad; the issue is knowing who is supplying you and what value they add.
Negotiating at the fair
Do not negotiate only on unit price. Discuss:
- MOQ by SKU and total order.
- Sample approval process.
- Tooling or mould charges.
- Packaging cost.
- Spare-parts allowance.
- Inspection standard.
- Defect tolerance.
- Production lead time.
- Deposit and balance terms.
- Incoterm: EXW, FOB, CIF or another agreed basis.
- Ownership of designs, files and moulds.
Never pay a large deposit at a booth simply because the exhibitor offers a "fair-only discount." Verify the company, contract, bank account and product specification first.
Costs to budget
A realistic budget should include visa-centre fees, invitation/document costs, flights, hotel, local transport, food, translator, international roaming or connectivity, travel insurance, samples, courier, factory trips and contingency.
Costs rise sharply during Canton Fair weeks, particularly for hotels near Pazhou. Booking early is important, but use changeable reservations until visa timing is reasonably clear.
Halal food and prayer
Guangzhou has Muslim communities and halal restaurants, particularly around Xiaobei and other established Muslim areas. Halal options near the fair can be limited or crowded, so delegates should plan meals rather than assuming suitable food will always be available inside the venue.
Carry a prayer app or compass and confirm prayer arrangements with the hotel or delegation organizer. ChinaChallo's delegation model includes halal meal planning and on-ground guidance, which is especially helpful for first-time visitors.
Canton Fair versus Yiwu
The Canton Fair is a scheduled trade exhibition where many manufacturers and exporters present product ranges. It is usually stronger for factory relationships, larger orders, machinery, industrial products and structured supplier comparison.
Yiwu International Trade Market is a permanent wholesale market with an enormous variety of small commodities. It is often more suitable for mixed-product sourcing, lower MOQs and buyers who want many SKUs in one shipment.
Many serious buyers combine the Canton Fair with Yiwu, Foshan, Dongguan or Shenzhen depending on their categories.
After the fair: where the real work begins
Within 48 hours of each meeting:
- Organize supplier notes and photographs.
- Send a written request for quotation.
- Confirm exact specifications and Incoterm.
- Verify the legal company and bank account.
- Order samples from the strongest candidates.
- Compare landed cost, not only factory price.
- Arrange inspection before shipment.
- Use a written purchase contract.
The fair creates opportunities. Quality control, payment safety, logistics and follow-up turn those opportunities into a successful import business.
Common mistakes Pakistani buyers make
- Attending the wrong phase.
- Going without a sourcing brief.
- Comparing prices for products with different specifications.
- Assuming every booth is a factory.
- Failing to calculate Pakistani duty, tax and freight.
- Not testing WeChat and payment tools before travel.
- Carrying too many samples during the day.
- Paying deposits before verification.
- Forgetting to record booth and hall numbers.
- Returning home without a follow-up schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Canton Fair open to Pakistani buyers?
Yes. Pakistani business buyers can register as overseas buyers, obtain the appropriate China visa and attend the relevant phase.
Can a first-time importer attend?
Yes, but a first-time importer should prepare a category, budget and target landed cost. Guided support is particularly valuable for the first trip.
Is English enough?
Many export-facing booth staff speak some English. A capable Mandarin translator becomes important for technical specifications, factory visits and detailed negotiation.
Can I attend two phases?
Yes, provided your visa, travel dates and budget cover the gap between phases. The best combination depends on your products.
Does a Canton Fair invitation guarantee a visa?
No. It is a supporting document. The Chinese Embassy or Consulate makes the final decision.
