"China visit visa" is a common phrase in Pakistan, but it is not one single official category. The correct visa depends on whether you are travelling as a tourist, visiting a Chinese relative, or visiting a foreign family member who lives in China.
Applying under the wrong category can cause delay or refusal.
Quick category guide

Group L visa for tourism
The current Chinese Embassy instruction for Pakistan lists Group L for tourists visiting China in a group of at least five people.
The required invitation is an Invitation Letter for Tourist Group issued by an authorized tourism authority in China, usually the relevant local Culture and Tourism Bureau upon request from a Chinese travel agency.
This means a Pakistani tourist should not assume that an individual hotel booking and personal itinerary are enough for an L visa. The trip should be arranged through an authorized group-tour channel that can provide the correct invitation.
Typical Group L documents
- Passport valid for more than six months.
- Passport information-page copy.
- CNIC copies.
- Online visa application and compliant photograph.
- Police character/clearance certificate under the current common-document rule.
- Tourist-group invitation from the authorized Chinese tourism channel.
- Group itinerary, accommodation and travel details.
- Additional documents requested by the centre or Embassy.
The travel agency should explain whether passports receive individual visa stickers or whether the group is processed under a group arrangement, because operational handling can vary.
Visiting Chinese family: Q1 and Q2
Q visas apply to family members of Chinese citizens or foreigners who hold Chinese permanent residence.
Q2: short family visit
Q2 is for a family visit of up to 180 days. Current documents include:
- Invitation from the eligible family member in China.
- Copy of the inviting Chinese citizen's ID, or the foreign permanent resident's passport and permanent-resident ID.
- Original and copy of proof of family relationship.
- Return itinerary or e-ticket booking.
- Common documents required for the applicant.
Q1: long family reunion
Q1 is for a stay of more than 180 days for family reunion or other qualifying long-term arrangements. The applicant normally needs to apply for a residence permit after entering China under the rules applicable to long-stay visa holders.
Who counts as family?
The official definition for Q visas includes spouses, parents, spouse's parents, sons and daughters, spouses of sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, paternal and maternal grandparents and grandchildren.
Visiting a foreign family member living in China: S1 and S2
S visas are for family members of foreigners who are legally residing in China for work, study or another qualifying status.
S2: short visit
S2 covers a short family visit of up to 180 days. It can also cover certain private matters, including medical-treatment circumstances subject to additional evidence.
Typical documents include:
- Invitation from the foreign resident in China.
- Copy of the inviter's passport and current residence permit or valid visa.
- Original and copy of the relationship certificate.
- Return itinerary.
- Common application documents.
S1: long visit
S1 is for specified close family members planning to stay more than 180 days. The current category focuses on spouses, parents, children under 18 and parents-in-law of a foreigner residing in China for work or study. Long-stay holders normally must complete residence-permit formalities after entry.
Relationship documents and apostille
Examples include marriage certificates, birth certificates and official kinship records. When issued by Pakistani authorities, these documents may need an apostille from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Embassy has warned that relationship documents and police certificates are returned when a QR-code sticker does not display the correct record. Scan every QR code before submission.
Invitation-letter content for Q and S visas
The invitation should clearly state:
- Inviter's full name, gender and date of birth.
- Chinese ID number, or foreign passport and residence-status details.
- Current address, phone number and email in China.
- Invitee's full name, gender, date of birth, nationality and passport number.
- Relationship between inviter and invitee.
- Intended arrival date and length of stay.
- Who will pay the expenses.
- Inviter's signature and date.
Use consistent names and dates across the invitation, form, flight and relationship documents.
Application process from Pakistan
- Identify the correct category: Group L, Q1/Q2 or S1/S2.
- Select the visa centre based on permanent residence.
- Complete the online form and upload documents.
- Wait for online approval.
- Print the Visa Application Certificate.
- Submit the passport and originals at the relevant Gerry's centre.
- Pay service charges.
- Attend an interview or provide biometrics if instructed.
- Collect and check the issued visa.
Financial evidence
The Embassy may request evidence that the trip can be funded. The invitation should clearly identify whether the applicant or inviter will bear expenses. For medical-treatment cases, substantially stronger financial evidence and hospital documents can be required.
Can I visit family on a tourist visa?
Use the category that reflects the primary purpose. A person visiting an eligible relative should normally use Q or S rather than describing the trip as tourism.
Can I travel alone as a tourist?
The current Pakistan-specific Embassy instruction lists Group L for at least five tourists. Before planning an individual tourist trip, obtain written confirmation from the official visa centre about whether an individual L route is currently being accepted for your situation.
Can my spouse join a Canton Fair trip?
A spouse joining mainly for tourism may need the appropriate tourist-group arrangement. A spouse attending commercial meetings should use the correct business purpose. ChinaChallo can align the spouse's itinerary and supporting documents with a delegation, but the visa category must remain truthful.
Common mistakes
- Calling every visit an L visa.
- Using Q when the inviter is a foreign student or employee rather than a Chinese citizen/permanent resident.
- Missing original relationship documents.
- Unapostilled Pakistani certificates when apostille is required.
- Invitation missing inviter's residence status.
- Passport and relationship-document names not matching.
- Residence permit of inviter close to expiry.
- Applying for tourism when the real purpose is business.
Fees and processing
The official visa fee is currently PKR 0 for Pakistani citizens. The Visa Application Service Centre charges PKR 13,200 for regular service or PKR 19,800 for express service, inclusive of GST. Tour operator, invitation, document, apostille, insurance, courier and assistance costs are additional.
Allow time for online review, original-document checking and any interview.
